Tips on buying adsense websites on sitepoint marketplace or Digital Point

Some people have more time than money and prefer to and enjoy building their own websites so they can publish Google Adsense ads on them. Others have more money than time and prefer to buy sites that have already been pre-built and ready to go.

Sometimes on some of the major Internet marketing forums, like Digital Point, SitePoint or the Warrior Forum, you will see websites for sale that already have content on them and they’re all set up for Adsense ads. All you have to do is replace your Adsense publisher I.D. with the one on the site and you can be making money right away.

Or Can You?

It sure sounds like a great idea if you can get a good domain name with a good tight niche topic and lots of content – it’s like investing in real estate. You buy the site and hopefully start seeing a return on your money. But it doesn’t always happen this way.

First of all, you have to really know your stuff. You need to educate yourself on several things including domain names, amount of traffic the site gets, the quality of the content and the true value of the website.

Is It A Tight Niche?

Is it a good niche? Is it a broad site like JohnsGreatWidgets.com or is it targeted to a more direct audience like JohnsAntiqueRedWidgets.com? This is important. The latter is a smaller niche and has a better chance of making money. The search engines will love it because it is topic specific.

Is It A Good Domain Name?

You want the shortest, most memorable domain name you can get. Longer names like the second one mentioned above don’t sit well with search engines and it’s harder for customers to remember. The shorter the better. Wouldn’t you love to have been the one to originally buy CreditCard.com? It’s short, memorable and it’s worth millions of dollars.

Does It Get A Lot Of Traffic?

You can go to Alexa.com and find out if the site gets a lot of traffic. The more website visitors it gets, the better your chances are for making money. Just go to Alexa and type in the domain name to see if it produces visitors. The less traffic, the less the website is worth.
Are There A Lot Of Sites Linking To It?

If there are already a lot of quality sites linking to your prospective website, this helps you get a lot of love from the search engines (more love = more traffic). You can find out how many link backs the site gets by doing a Google search like this:
links: example.com

If there are a lot of other sites linking to that site, that means that it is listed in the search engines and they may see it as an authority site and that is good news for you.

Will The Site Make You Back The Money You Invest?

This one is harder to answer because you kind of have to depend on the seller to be honest with you regarding how much it brings in every month. You will want to recover your investment in 6 to 12 months. You can also go to a site like GoDaddy.com and get an appraisal done within a few hours.

The Biggest Thing You Must Be Aware Of!

If the site was dropped as by Google Adsense because the previous owner violated Adsense terms of service, you may have a hard time convincing them to give you another shot at it. ALSO – search for the site on Google and look at Google’s cache and see what the site used to be; was it associated with adult content or something Google Adsense disapproves of? Avoid it like the plague.

Your Best Bet

The best thing you can do is learn to build your own websites (it’s easy) and start them from scratch and build them right. Domains cost $10 or less and so does hosting, so learn to do it yourself.
